Toyota equips its vehicles with the latest active safety technologies in order to better protect all occupants in a wide variety of accident scenarios. This is why thirteen of its vehicles have received either the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ awards from the IIHS in 2022. Here are some of those technologies.
The Pre-Collision System
Every Toyota vehicle is equipped as standard with the pre-collision system which can detect other vehicles and pedestrians in order to warn the driver of a risk of collision. If the driver doesn’t react in time, the pre-collision system can even apply the brakes on its own. In some vehicles, this system is enhanced with cyclist and low light pedestrian detection, as well as intersection support with emergency steering assist. This last function can help the driver perform an evasive maneuver by applying enough force to the steering wheel to ensure the obstacle is avoided.
The Lane Keeping and Lane Tracing Assist
Every Toyota vehicle is equipped with the Lane Keeping Assist system or the Lane Tracing Assist, two systems that help prevent accidents where the vehicle inadvertently exits its lane on the highway or other roads with well-defined lane markings. Vehicles equipped with Lane Tracing Assist also add the capability to remain centred in their lane by using a small amount of force on the steering system to gently reposition the vehicle between the lane lines even in curves.
The Dynamic Cruise Control
Every Toyota vehicle is available with Dynamic Cruise Control which adds to the overall safety by making it possible to keep a safe distance from the preceding vehicle even when the speed of traffic varies. Many Toyota models are also equipped with an enhanced version of this system that is capable of bringing the vehicle to a full stop and then bringing it back up to speed without any driver input in heavy traffic situations. This makes driving in congested areas safer and more enjoyable.
